Torture in the Middle Age - Slam Dunk Paragraph

In Chaos, I was tasked with creating a Slam Dunk Paragraph about torture in the Middle Ages.

Why was Torture used? Unfortunately, the reason a lot of people in the Middle Ages used torture was that its the best way to get something out of a criminal or just as a punishment for their crimes, an example would be a thief, witch or murderer. Examples of the punishments would be pillars, thumb screws, the rack and Catherine wheel (breaking wheel), all of these were deadly and only the thumbscrews would only injure but still cause intense pain. All the methods would eventually lead to a confession/death, some shorter and others taking longer. As I have explained these were used often and had 100% success in either two of the summaries of the acts, death or a confession. Being so useful meant that the techniques would be used basically every time for a confession which was wanted from an unwilling criminal. They worked so well that they were used mostly instead of jail time, but there still was dungeons used as jail cells just not often. As you know now, torture was very useful for a wanted confession and would lead to 100% success. These confessions could've been unsafe.

I found doing the task a little difficult with not wanting to repeat an idea. It was getting evidence sentences that weren't the exact idea but bringing in actual evidence that was different in each sentence. Like one was, death from a wanted confession and another would be the success rate of the sessions.

Coraline Film Study: Challenges Chart & Identifying 2-3 strengths in Coraline and character of my own choice

What am I learning?
Understand how characters are developed in a film
How does this work show my learning?
It shows that I have understood how a character has encountered and dealt with a problem, described their reaction and also described what their reaction says about the character.
What am I wondering as a result of this learning?
I am wondering that if one problem which a character has faced and dealt with, with a reaction which gives a conclusive opinion on them as a trait but it is a one-time thing doesn't make sense for such a conclusive idea of the character, for there could be another time the character deals with a similar problem which is handled differently and shows a different trait.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.
Coraline:
Characters 2-3 strengths showed in the story:
Coraline showed curiosity throughout mostly the whole story where there were multiple cases of Coraline wanting to explore unknown areas like the 'Otherworld', the well by her house and the exploration through the pathway to the 'Otherworld'. Coraline has also shown bravery in her quest of leaving the 'other world' as she had to face evil creatures for the eyes of the ghost children and The Beldam herself, Coraline pushed herself to make a rational decision while there for the 2nd to last time when she had to throw the cat at The Beldam's face as a distraction, it seemed to be the best option at that moment. Lastly, Coraline had shown perseverance when throughout her mission to leave the 'other world' and get rid of The Beldam, she had to fight off creatures and the 'love' of the Beldam which The Beldam was disguised as Coraline's 'Other Mother' but Coraline understood she wasn't her real mum since she had button eyes. When Coraline was collecting the last ghost child's eye and she had thrown her triangle circle cut out at the mouse who had the last eye and missed. she thought it was all over and that she had lost but when she had made it to ground level after leaving 'Other Mr Bobinsky's' house the 'other cat' surprised her with the rat and eye which pushed her to continue her mission.

The Beldam:
Characters 2-3 strengths showed in the story:
The Beldam had also shown perseverance throughout her pursuit to fool Coraline into loving her and then eating her soul, she had given love and delicious foods to please Coraline and kept up the act of being her 'Other Mother' till the end where she failed to capture Coraline once again but was finished off. The Beldam had social intelligence when it came to speaking and luring Coraline into the trap when she planned for, she knew how to speak and try to persuade Coraline. She gave what Coraline wanted and kept her act up the whole time till she showed her real self at the end but failed to get Coraline in her trap and is forever locked in her 'Otherworld'.

2.
Perseverance - Is important to have for when you have hit a roadblock or obstacle while trying to pursue something, it gives you motivation and helps you conquer them and allows success come quicker than you once thought.
Social intelligence - Another trait which is one which is very helpful as it gives you a step up in a lot of situations that require you to speak, knowing what to say and understanding what the energy is coming from a group or individual.
Bravery - Bravery is always something which you should have so when it comes to facing something big you aren't in fear and you can face it upfront.

What am I learning?
Understand how characters are developed in a film
How does this work show my learning?
This piece of work shows my understanding of the traits of which I have linked to two characters.
What am I wondering as a result of this learning?
I'm wondering if I have made correct statements and if I have made correct assumptions of traits for the characters.

My Timeline of important plot points in 'Coraline':https://infograph.venngage.com/edit/80723a2c-04ed-4688-b421-258f5c3d313a
what am I learning?
Explain how the film's plot is constructed to engage a viewer using technical language
How does this work show my learning?
This workpiece shows that I understand what parts in the film are major and not minor to the plot in which I have put all important parts which I think are to be the major plot points.
What am I wondering as a result of this learning?
I am wondering if what I have put is important and if I had been to brief with the info on plot points. I am also wondering if I have fully understood what a major and minor plot point is.

SEXXXY Paragraph on

Workshop 3 follow up task:

In Coraline, a long shot is used quite well to display a dull world. For instance, in this shot, we can see Coraline and the cat standing on a hill with dull colours surrounding them. This shows that the real world is boring and bland but safe since nothing is out to get them. This was done to make the real world seem not fun at all, while the 'Otherworld' seems joyful and alive. This worked well with the surrounding background being dead and not reactive. This can be contrasted to the 'Otherworld' which has more light and charming colours with happy music being played when outside and indoors.

In the film, Coraline, we can see that a long (wide) shot is used to display the whole Bedroom in the 'Otherworld'. This is demonstrated by showing that the bedroom is filled with many nice colours like pink and purple presenting this room was made girly for Coraline. This makes the audience feel as if the 'Other parents' really want the 'otherworld' to be perfect for her so that she can be fulfilled with happiness. The director did this to show that the 'otherworld seems amazing and so the audience doesn't expect this 'otherworld' be a trap. This worked well with the magical music which is played as we are introduced to the bedroom. This can be contrasted to the house in the real world which shows and gives no feeling of magic or exciting colours.

In this shot of Coraline, a medium shot is used to show the details of the lookalike Coraline doll. We see this when the Beldam is letting go of the doll which will be swept into the real world. This makes the audience theorise where the doll could be going or what its meaning is. The purpose of this was to give the audience a chance to theorise what meaning the doll has to the film. Combined with the eerie music which is played to make the scene already mysterious and more creepy makes it work well with the doll. This can be compared to a time later in the movie when Coraline first comes across the tunnel to the "otherworld' although there is spiritual music being played still it gives the audience the chance to theories the meaning of the tunnel.

4 screenshots of Coraline with SEXXXY Paragraphs

In Coraline this shot of the Beldam, a medium close up is used. This is demonstrated by showing only the face and of a lifted hand with the Beldam showing a smirk, this makes the audience feel as if the Beldam really isn't up to any good by having a smirk which could mean a troublesome intent. The director did this to make it that the audience could have an idea on what the villain is thinking of doing or just thinking in general. Combined with the bright yellow lighting in the room which gives a calm feeling to the situation at hand makes the viewer have different perspectives to this scene. This reminds me of another time in the film when Coraline first comes into the 'Other world' where her 'Other Parents' seem cool but there is an eerie feeling to them.

In the film Coraline, a Long Shot is used for this scene amazingly. For example, in this shot we can see that it has been taken from a far distance from the end with the door, giving the viewers a curious thought on what could be at the end of the tunnel. This makes the audience feel curious about what is at the end of this blue shaded tunnel with a door which is slightly opened, making us feel as if we want to travel the distance to find out. The reason this shot was taken was for the audience to have a feeling of curiosity by the director. This worked well with the music which made the scene seem spectacular and cool with its spiritual uplifting sound. This reminds me of a time in the film when Coraline has her first encounter with the lively garden that has music playing in the scene which sounds spectacular as well as spiritual.

In this scene of Coraline, a Mid Shot is used, and it is used quite well. For instance, in this scene we can see that we are only seeing Coraline from her shoulders and above while her mother is blurred because of her being in the background, as well we are seeing Coraline is annoyed over something. This makes us understand that something has happened that made her feel annoyed and that she could be expressing it to her mother. This was done so that the viewers could maybe show compassion towards Coraline for her annoyed behaviour or the mother who is probably getting annoyed by Coraline for expressing her feelings of annoyance. This worked well because it shows that the director might want you to feel for the characters. This aspect can be compared to a time later on where Coraline goes shopping with her mother and wants to purchase a pair of gloves which her mother declines and leaves Coraline annoyed.

In this shot of Coraline a medium shot was utilized. We see this when the shot is used to show the emotion in Coraline and the ‘Other Mother’s’’ faces as shown here with Coraline seeming interested in what the ‘Other Mother’ has to say. This makes the audience feel as the ‘Other Mother’ has something to do and she’s telling Coraline an activity which she could do instead of speaking with her. The director did this to display that the ‘Other Mother’ was already occupied and that Coraline was talking with her to find an activity she could do. Combined with the calm warm lighting in the room in which the two characters are standing means there seems to be no danger in the room. This aspect can be compared to the few times Coraline has spoken with the ‘Other Parents’ where there seems to be no danger or life-threatening situations.

Workshop 2: Linking themes to the impacts of Angles, Movement and Shots

Brainstorm:
* High angle - Makes the character 'other Wybie' look small, weak and vulnerable

* POV - Other Mother - Dominant and powerful
* Medium Shot - gives us some idea of background but not full

*Audience feels - powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through Other Mothers POV.
- sad/worried for Wybie-he looks small, sad, innocent
- First character in other world to suggest something is not right
*Directors Purpose-makes us feel sorry for Wybie
-Makes audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice-foreshadowing

In the shot with the other Wybie and the Other Mother, high angle shots are used effectively to show the theme 'Looks can be deceiving'! This is demonstrated through a high angle shot from the point of view of the Other Mother. She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared Other Wybie. This makes the audience feel sorry for Wybie and makes the Other Mother seem powerful. The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but is surrounded by darkness, the director has created an atmosphere of caution-something is not right. This reminds the viewer of a later scene where Coraline is looking up at the Other Mother in horror as she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving because the Other Mother wasn't nice like Coraline first thought.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd Picture:

What is happening in this shot?
Coraline is searching for her lookalike doll which has moved from its spot which it was last put.

Angles/shots used:
POV is being used for the doll so that it can stare at Coraline while she searches for it and a dutch tilt is being used as well to add effect.

How does the viewer feel?
The viewer feels as if they are looking through the doll's eyes and are also feeling a sense of being hunted for.

Why did the director do this?
To put the audience through what the doll is seeing; Coraline searching for them.

Additional info music/lightning: Music eerie Lighting: Is dark seeming to be bad or scary.

Film Study Workshop 1 - Unpacking Themes and Ideas

Theme/Idea - Something that links throughout the story

'Looks can be deceiving
-Things aren't always what they seem

Example: The Baldam/ The Other Mother
- She starts off as good/kind but is revealed to be an evil soul-devouring metal spider demon.
- Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that Coraline and audience don't notice.
- Important to the story because helps the audience understand Coraline's choice when she realises that having everything perfect won't make her happy

Example 2: Other World vs Real World
- The other world is a perfect web/trap to catch Coraline, whereas the real world is boring but safe
-Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap.
- Important to help the audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world

Statement - In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively.
Evidence - For instance, the heme 'looks can be deceiving' is shown through the character of the 'Other Mother'. - 'The Other Mother' starts kind but is revealed to be a soul-devouring demon.
eXplanation (audience) - This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust people that seem perfect at first glance
eXplanation(director) - This was made to make the audience feel wrong or develop a sense of caution towards new situations
- Coinciding with this is the use of colour o show he 'Other Mother' is becoming eviler. At the start, she is surrounded by warm colours that makes us feel safe, but by the end, it is dark with neon green which her seem dangerous.
Your link - This theme is also shown through the changes in the 'other world' as it is revealed to be a spider web designed to catch Coraline.

NZ Government Compare and Contrast Paragraph

Today in Power to the People Hurumanu, we learnt about the Maori authority System and the British Settler Government.

This Compare and Contrast is about two systems

Introduce your idea: In NZ there were two types of Governments. One was the Maori authority System, the other British Settler Government.

The Maori authority system was not useful since there was no judges, police or prisons so criminals were only punished by another family which is flawed in some way. Tapu's could be flawed since it would be up to the leaders of the region or anyone in power to punish.

Whereas the British Settler Government system is more built up to be successful since there's a law to control society and if the laws were broken there was set punishments depending on the amount of damage caused.

This matters because it shines a light on the differences between Maori and British and the history of NZ governments.

Democracy and Dictatorship cards - English/social studies

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GnAQsIQbtC7H1BsqsT5R07tUCWTt-fpM7eC3G87aiA0/edit

Waitangi day - English/social studies

Reading comprehension task #1
1. The British crown and a group of about 500 Maori rangatira (chiefs)
2. In the 1830s because the British government wanted to protect the Maori people, trade and their  own people because the french had an interest in taking over New Zealand
3. So the Maori chiefs knew what they were agreeing to on the Waitangi treaty.
4. About 40 chiefs
5. Misunderstandings between the translations of Maori and the Crown
6. Maori began to protest and march for their land throughout the '70s. In 1975, the government created the treaty of Waitangi act and Waitangi court of justice.
7. My opinion on the treaty of Waitangi and it being a national holiday:

My opinion on the Treaty of Waitangi is that it is amazing that the Europeans were able to create a treaty and a government in a country that was ruled by people that did not know about other people that existed other than their own. The British also created a court of justice and defused the dispute on the land they took from the Maori.

Also, my opinion on the Treaty of Waitangi being a national holiday is that it's great because it gives everyone in New Zealand a free day off from work, school, etc. It's also good because we are celebrating the Treaty of Waitangi and the ability of outsiders to live in NZ.

8. A 'tribunal' means:
A court of justice
A body established to settle certain types of disputes.

Reading comprehension #2

1. 500 Maori chiefs and the British monarchy.
2. In 1840, The British made promises and agreements in the treaty.
3. So the Maori could understand.
4. 40 chiefs.
5. The misunderstanding between the translation of English to Maori.
6. Protests and marches.
7. there wasn't enough importance put on the treaty since so much was happening in the world.
8.  A 'tribunal' means:
A court of justice
A body established to settle certain types of disputes.

Reading comprehension #3

1. The 500 Maori chiefs and the British monarchy.
2. In 1840, so the British could set promises and agreements.
3.  So the Maori chiefs knew what they were agreeing to on the Waitangi treaty.
4. Yes because he was the first Maori to agree with the treaty in the first place, and the first to sign it. although over time his opinion started to drift away from the acceptance of the treaty.

Signing the treaty
Q: Why do you think they would do this?
A: Because the Maori chiefs didn't want insiders living on their land, taking their resources and food.
