Waitangi day - English/social studies

Reading comprehension task #1
1. The British crown and a group of about 500 Maori rangatira (chiefs)
2. In the 1830s because the British government wanted to protect the Maori people, trade and their  own people because the french had an interest in taking over New Zealand
3. So the Maori chiefs knew what they were agreeing to on the Waitangi treaty.
4. About 40 chiefs
5. Misunderstandings between the translations of Maori and the Crown
6. Maori began to protest and march for their land throughout the '70s. In 1975, the government created the treaty of Waitangi act and Waitangi court of justice.
7. My opinion on the treaty of Waitangi and it being a national holiday:

My opinion on the Treaty of Waitangi is that it is amazing that the Europeans were able to create a treaty and a government in a country that was ruled by people that did not know about other people that existed other than their own. The British also created a court of justice and defused the dispute on the land they took from the Maori.

Also, my opinion on the Treaty of Waitangi being a national holiday is that it's great because it gives everyone in New Zealand a free day off from work, school, etc. It's also good because we are celebrating the Treaty of Waitangi and the ability of outsiders to live in NZ.

8. A 'tribunal' means:
A court of justice
A body established to settle certain types of disputes.

3. So the Maori could understand.

3.  So the Maori chiefs knew what they were agreeing to on the Waitangi treaty.
4. Yes because he was the first Maori to agree with the treaty in the first place, and the first to sign it. although over time his opinion started to drift away from the acceptance of the treaty.

Q: Why do you think they would do this?
A: Because the Maori chiefs didn't want insiders living on their land, taking their resources and food.
